Exercise 4 LISTENING 40 page 82
Jesse James is the most famous American outlaw of the 19th century. He lived in Missouri, one of the southern states of the USA. It was a difficult time in America. There were black slaves working in the southern states, but not in the northern states. The northern states wanted to ban slavery, so the southern states decided to be independent. This became the American Civil War. Jesse James was 14 when the war started. For four years the South fought against the North. Jesse James and his brother Frank fought for the South. There were lots of terrible battles and a lot of men died. The North finally won the war. When the war ended, the new government punished the southern states. Jesse and Frank were angry at the injustice. They formed a gang of outlaws. The outlaws wanted to fight the government, so they robbed government banks and trains and stole money. But they killed people, too. The outlaws got a lot of sympathy from southern people. Some people said Jesse James was like Robin Hood. Finally, the government promised money to anyone who could catch Jesse. So a friend of his in the gang murdered him. He was just 35 when he died.
